Handy Helpers For Moving Furniture
73
Moving furniture is never much fun and usually results in an injury or two. Not to mention all the arguing about where to put things or how to try and move something big through a small doorway. But there are some handy innovations that can help you with these tasks, and since I spent most of today changing around our bedroom I thought it might be a good topic for my latest hub.
Some of the items I'm mentioning may be a bit pricey, but if they save you from a back injury, save your furniture from being damaged or make the job a lot faster and easier then it's going to be worth it.
Back Support Belts
First off before even attempting to move any furniture I recommend doing a few back stretches and then strapping on a back support belt. Especially if like me you have a bad back and want to avoid straining it any more than you have to. Even if you don't have a bad back all it takes is one wrong lift to get one, so please consider getting a brace or belt before a big move.
Sliders
These little guys might look worthless but stick them at each corner of a heavy piece of furniture that usually requires two people to move it and suddenly one person can move it with ease. Make sure to buy the correct ones for your type of floor. There are different types for carpet and for wood floors.
You can also choose between a reusable version or a stick-on version that will stay for good. I recommend the reusable type.
Liftbuddy
The only problem with using sliders is that you still have to lift up all the corners of the furniture to slide them underneath.
Don't want to risk a back injury lifting it up yourself? Then try this nifty little gadget that can slide under the furniture and hold it up for you. It's fairly pricey so I'd only recommend it if you do a lot of moving house or lifting things. If you live alone this could save you having to call up a friend or family member every time you want to shift a piece of furniture as it allows you to do the move by yourself.
Lifting Straps
There are times where you just have to have 2 sets of hands. Moving a mattress for instance. That's where these lifting straps come in real handy. No more trying to find a hold on furniture that isn't mover-friendly. Just slide these straps under the furniture and two people can lift heavy items with ease. There are shoulder lift or arm lift versions. I think it's just a matter of preference but they all really help make those awkward big items a lot easier to handle.
Moving Blankets
These have 2 uses. They are great for wrapping around furniture to protect it from damage in the move, or they can also be used like the sliders. Just lift up the furniture, put a blanket underneath and then grab two corners of the blanket and have someone else grab the other two and you should be able to slide the furniture across the floor. It won't work as well as the sliders but it still works. These moving blankets are pretty cheap and are made out of recycled denim usually. I am sure after moving you could find lots of uses for them around the garage too. If you want to you can hire them from some moving companies if you just want to use them for the move.
Trolleys/Dollies
I love trolleys they just have so many uses and are so handy to have around. I used to have the blue trolley shown in my office at work and I've lost count of how many times I ended up carting boxes of stock from the store room to the office are and visa versa on it. In the case of moving furniture you can sit boxes or furniture onto the trolley or dolly and then wheel the item/s with ease to their destination. They save time as you can carry more boxes on a trolley than just in your hands so the job gets done quicker and with less straining muscles.
Adjustible Bungee Cord
You probably won't need these but I just wanted to mention them because they are great for helping secure furniture on the back of trailers, and for securing boxes on a trolley. They are easy to use with their hook ends and elastic stretchiness.
If you don't want to fork out the dough for some of these items you can always hire them at place like Avon Rentals here
So next time you're moving house, re-arranging furniture or just shifting a shelf or entertainment unit to get behind it, then please think about buying one or some of the items mentioned and save a lot of hassle and stress.
Cheers,
Listerino
PS While I was browsing for moving items I came across these great blog posts and I really wanted to share them just because I thought they had some great information.
